What Are the Different Types of Dental Plans?
- Preferred Provider Organization (DPPO)
A DPPO is a dental plan that uses a network of dentists who have agreed to provide dental services for set fees. The number of dental services covered depends on the plan. If you have a PPO plan and see a dentist out of the network, you will most likely have more out of pocket expenses. A PPO dental plan will typically have a larger network of dental providers, and you’ll be able to switch dentists or see a specialist without a referral from a primary care dentist. In fact, you aren’t required to designate a primary care dentist when enrolling in a PPO dental plan.
If you are considering a PPO dental plan, keep in mind that you’ll pay a higher premium and will likely be required to meet a deductible. In addition, most PPO dental plans have an annual limit on the amount of coverage
- Dental Health Maintenance Organization (DHMO)
Dental HMO Insurance Plans
A DHMO provides lower cost coverage with a focus on preventive care. DHMO plans are designed to encourage regular dental visits and check-ups while minimizing spending. Any out-of-pocket costs are clearly defined, and most DHMO plans do not have exclusions for pre-existing conditions or missing teeth.
If you choose to enroll in a DHMO plan, you are required to select a primary dental facility to manage and coordinate your oral health needs. If a treatment by a specialist is necessary, the primary dental facility or dentist will first need to submit a referral. You’ll need to use in-network dentists in order to obtain coverage under a DHMO plan.
Find dental insurance plans for you and your family
Deciding whether a DHMO or DPPO plan is best for you depends on what matters most to you for your dental care.
If you have a favorite dentist who you or your kids can’t live without, a DPPO plan can allow you to keep that dentist and still receive at least partial coverage for your routine cleanings and other dental procedures.
DPPOs could also work better if you move often, or if you live in a larger city where you’d rather explore several dentists’ offices before you stick with one.
But if you’re not picky about your dentist but would rather prioritize keeping your out-of-pocket costs low, a DHMO plan could be the best bet for you.
In addition, contact your existing dentist to find out what kind of coverage their facility accepts prior to selecting an insurance plan.
Vision
Vision insurance promotes good health.
The term “vision insurance” is commonly used to describe health and wellness plans designed to reduce your costs for routine preventive eye care (eye exams) and prescription eyewear (eyeglasses and contact lenses). A vision plan will help you take care of your eyes and save you money at the same time.
What should you look for in a vision plan?
Your vision plan should cover an annual comprehensive eye exam, frames or contacts, and lens enhancements also consider how often you want new glasses and your overall frame allowance.
you’ll want to make sure the doctor network includes convenient locations.
During your eye exam, the doctor will take time to get to know you and your eyes and can even help detect early signs of serious health conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, so you can manage them before they become more difficult problems.
